Carlos Ghosn has some harsh-sounding words...
for alternative vehicles which still use some form of oil for their operation — think current hybrids and future extended-range electric vehicles.
“I want a pure electric car. I do not want a range extender. I do not want another hybrid. It is not going to be zero emissions in certain conditions. .” Sounds like Ghosn is taking a little shot at today's hybrids like the Toyota Prius and even Nissan's own Altima, which uses technology licensed from Toyota. Also under fire from the Nissan chief would be the next generation of green cars like the Chevy Volt

Delhi: 30% subsidy on battery-run vehicles
The government's decision was probably spurred by the fact that Delhi has recorded extremely high levels of suspended particulate matter and respirable suspended particulate matter. But for Delhiites, a stronger incentive for moving to battery-operated vehicles is the high price of fuel."Battery operated cars, for instance, can be charged at a cost of 50p/km. They are clutchless, gearless, noiseless and completely pollution free," said Dadoo. However, there are very few manufacturers of battery-operated vehicles in India. Reva is the only company manufacturing four-wheelers.

General Motors calls end to petrol cars.
16 January 2008: General Motors has stunned the driving world today by announcing an imminent end to the petrol car, conceding the supply of oil has peaked, and that electric cars are now the future. CEO Rick Wagoner said that he was certain electric cars were the way of the future. "There is no doubt demand for oil is out pacing supply at a rapid pace, and has been for some time now," Mr Wagoner said at the Detroit Motor Show. "As a business necessity and an obligation to society we need to develop alternative sources of propulsion."
The Speech That Shook the World
"Good morning. . . welcome to the start of the 2008 auto show season.
You know, similar to our opening act this morning, the auto industry has a lot of balls in the air right now when it comes to the future of automotive propulsion, and for very good reason. Earlier this month, the price of oil hit a hundred-dollars-a-barrel, as demand for energy around the world is growing faster than supply. And that's not just a cyclical phenomenon. . . it's structural, given the growth in emerging economies, which we fully expect to continue.
Here's an amazing statistic: on a global basis, to satisfy all energy needs, we're consuming roughly 1,000 barrels of oil every single second. . . and the rate of consumption continues to grow. In fact, according to the U.S. Department of Energy, the world will need about 70 percent more energy in 2030 than it did in 2004.
Now, when you consider these facts in light of the world's heavy reliance on oil for automotive transportation. . . in the U.S. , for example, 96 percent reliance on oil. . . we have to ask ourselves. . . what does all this mean for the global auto industry?
For us at GM, the answer is perfectly clear. As a business necessity, and an obligation to society. . . we need to develop alternative sources of propulsion. . . based on diverse sources of energy. . . to meet the world's growing demand for our products....Just to be perfectly clear. . . GM will continue to drive the development of electrically driven vehicles...they uniquely have the potential to remove the automobile from the environmental equation."
GM is the largest manufacturer of vehicles in the world, with the statement seen as just the beginning of a mass switch to alternative sources of energy.
